Pneumococcal Vaccine

The Pneumococcal Vaccine: shields against infections from the S. pneumoniae bacteria, protecting against pneumonia, ear/brain/blood infections

There are 2 types of Pneumococcal Vaccines:

Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13) protects against 13 strains
Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine (PPSV23) protects against 23 strains

For eligible individuals, receive PCV13 first, followed by PPSV23 no less than 8 weeks later, for optimal immunity. Consult our doctors for advice on vaccine type and schedule.

Who should take it?

Persons aged 65 years and above should be given one dose of PCV13 followed by one dose of PPSV23.

Others who benefit from the Pneumococcal vaccine include:

  • Persons who are immunocompromised
  • Persons with cochlear implants, cerebrospinal fluid leaks or abnormal spleen function

FAQs

Pneumococcal Vaccine

What if I cannot remember whether I have received the Pneumococcal vaccine?

Refer to your immunisation record here:

  • Check with your regular clinic
  • Continue to make your appointment and let our doctor assess you prior to your vaccination

Can I obtain the Pneumococcal vaccine and Flu vaccine at the same time?

Yes, it is possible for you to do so. Our doctor will typically inject the vaccine on separate arms, and will advise you prior to the vaccination.

Do I take 1 dose or 2 doses?

Our doctor will assess and recommend accordingly. If you are due to obtain both the PCV13 and PPSV23, then you will be given the PCV13 first, followed by PPSV23 8 weeks or 1 year later.

Can I book an appointment if I have not reached 65 years of age?

We are able to conduct the Pneumococcal vaccination if you are under the age of 65. However, you will not be eligible for CHAS subsidies, unless you are deemed medically eligible.

It is thus not possible for you to book an appointment on the health appointment system if you are less than 65 years of age. You may however visit our clinic, so that our doctor can advise on your suitability accordingly.

What should I be careful of before taking the Pneumococcal vaccine?

Inform our doctors if you have past allergies to this vaccine, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a history of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).
